Training 2020

It is that time of year already and applications are open for 2020 courses.


Youth Evening Training starts this year (the first week of the summer term as usual) the week commencing the 20 April.

We plan to run beginner and intermediate youth courses on both a Monday and Wednesday evening, and a more advanced course on a Thursday evening. However places cannot be guaranteed and your are recommended to apply early. When you apply you will have the option to select either a Monday or a Wednesday for intermediate and beginner course however when we review the applications we will assess the ability of applicants to try and fit them into the correct group with matched abilities. So please be as flexible as possible with the two days as it may be that we offer you a different day to that which you have applied for. It is very difficult to ensure the quality of training if we have mixed ability groups.

The closing date for the Youth Evening Training is Friday 6 March. 

Adult Evening courses

Will run one evening a week from 5.30 / 6.00pm. The first course will start in May, with a second course starting in June / July.

Please apply early if you are interested as this will help us to plan better, although we will accept applications up to two weeks before the course start dates.

Club Opening Hours

The summer (April to October incl.) and winter (November to March incl.) opening hours are listed on the Social page of the website.

They remain unchanged, except on a Friday, which now has a new earlier opening time of 15:30hrs.

However please note that the club may be closed at anytime from 21.30hrs at the discretion of the manager delegate if there are no customers at this time.

Sarah Goddard Jones – Memorial Service

Sarah Goddard Jones.

A Memorial Service is to be held in St Peter’s Church, Newton at the end of Mary Twill Lane SA3 4RB, on Saturday the 24th August at 11:30am followed by refreshments at Mumbles Yacht Club.

This is the church where Sarah was christened.

Sarah will be sadly missed by all those that knew her.

New Dates – Laser Foiling Taster sessions – Apply Now

*New for 2019* We have a guest coach that will be running 2 two hour taster sessions on the Sat 11 and Sun 12 May 11am-1pm  (Each £30). Places are limited and you will be limited to the number of sessions you can participate in if we are over subscribed.

Please apply early. using the online Training application form and select 16+ Adult courses and Laser Foiling.

Please note the course is not restricted to 16+ we can take youth and adults.

Peter Perkins – Remembrance Service – 14 December 3pm

PERKINS Peter Geoffrey of Kilcarbry House, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, Ireland (formerly of Mayals and Art Repro) passed away peacefully after a short illness 23rd November 2018 in the loving care of Fionnuala and their children Megan and Brendan. Sadly missed by his brothers Michael, Brian, David (Swansea) and John (France), extended family, his Welsh sailing and Irish rugby families.

A remembrance service to be held in Clyne Chapel, Mayals at 3pm on Friday 14th December 2018, having had a previous celebration of life and cremation in Ireland.

The family invite everyone to join them in Mumbles Yacht Club afterwards.

No flowers, donations if so desired to the RNLI.

Safety Boat Course – Weekend of the 24 & 25 November – Apply now

We are running a Safety Boat Course on the weekend of the 24 & 25 November.

If you are interested please complete the online training course application form, as soon as possible, that can be found on the Training pages of the website.

This two-day course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities.

It includes rescue techniques and elements of race management and mark laying.

PB2 is a prerequisite and candidates must be 16+.

Course content includes; Preparation, boat handling, dinghy rescue, windsurfer rescue, kayak or canoe rescue (can be covered as theory), towing, end-of-day procedures, safety, suitability of craft, local factors, communication, rescuing other water users.

For members only the course fee is £50, provided that participants commit to helping out on the water at least 4 times per year.

If you are not already a member and are interested in joining and taking the course the fee is £225 inclusive of membership fees.

NEWTS week 2019 Advance Notice

After the hugely successful Newts Week 2018 we have been asked to confirm the date for 2019 so people can organise their holiday plans.

In 2019 Newts Week will be the week commencing Monday the 22 July. This is the first week of the school summer holidays, although the schools do not officially finish until the Monday; we anticipate however as in previous instances, that the Monday will be an INSET day.

So please put the date in your diaries and we will be posting more news in the new year along with general training course dates.

NEWTS Week 2018 – applications closed

Thank you to those of you that have applied for NEWTS week this year.

The closing date for applications was yesterday Sunday 3 June. I am sorry but due to the number of applications received this will be strictly applied and we will be unable to accept any late applications.

For those of you that have applied we will be in touch over the next few weeks once we have completed the course planning with enrolment information.

Galley opening Sunday 27 May

We apologise for the inconvenience but unfortunately due to staff availability we are unable to open the galley today Sunday 27 May after racing.

Please note the galley will open as usual for the rest of this week in accordance with the published opening times.

We apologise for the inconvenience and will make every effort to avoid this in the future.

The Galley regular opening times are:-

  • Monday: 1830 to 2100.
  • Tuesday: 1830 to 2100.
  • Wednesday: 1830 to 2100.
  • Thursday: 1830 to 2100.
  • Friday: Closed.
  • Saturday: 1230 to 1430.
  • Sunday: for 2 hours after any racing and closed otherwise.

The galley is also usually open after any scheduled sailing events not covered by the standard times.

Seeking volunteers for Club house working party 11/12/13 April 10:00-16:00Hrs

Landside committee have developed a plan of redecoration and upgrade of various parts of the club.

Following the very successful lounge painting party, we are SEEKING VOLUNTEERS to help us with the next phase.

During the daytime hours of 1000 to 1600 on APRIL 11th, 12th, 13th we will be redecorating the foyer area of the club.

We would really appreciate your support.

Youth Advanced training

For those that trained with Paul Wakelin last year, Paul has agreed to fit in another two sessions on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 February 10am-2pm to make up for sessions lost due to weather.

We hope then to plan further Thursday evening advanced training following a similar format to last year for those of you that took part last year and those sailors that are ready to move on from intermediate training. As soon as I have details I will let you know, but please apply now if you are interested so we can gauge interest.

Learn to Race for youth and adults – Whitsun Half Term – Monday 28 May to Thursday 31 May

If you can sail a triangle and want to be able to get out on the water more often and enjoy Club sailing then this is for you. More details will follow, but please apply early so we can gauge interest.

Windsurfing

We are planning on running some windsurf training this year; possibly a mix of Saturday morning / evening sessions. If you are interested please apply now and we will be in touch to plan how and when this is best delivered.

New Safety Boat and First Aid course dates

First Aid
This will be delivered across two evenings;
Thursday 1 February 6-9pm &
Thursday 8 February 6-9pm
Both in the Club.
Fee £20 for members (unless it is required for your role in the Club e.g. instructor in which case free of charge).

Safety Boat (note PB2 is a prerequisite)
This will be delivered over two days;
Saturday 10 March 9am-4pm &
Sunday 11 March 9am-4pm.
Fee £50 if you are already committed to helping out with safety cover at least 4 times a year.
Otherwise £225.

Christmas Party with Santa, disco and buffet

Santa is coming to Mumbles Yacht Club Saturday 16th December 4:30pm – 6.30 pm with a disco and buffet. Tickets are priced at £4 each and can be booked using this short online form, You just pay the £4 per childs ticket on arrival on the day. Children can of course bring a friend (and of course parents).
 
And for the older youngsters why don’t you make a social evening of it?

First Aid course 20 May 2017

We are running a First Aid course on Saturday 20 May. It is a full day course. We will confirm exact times in due course.

If you are an instructor or are working towards an instructors qualification and are a volunteer at the Club, the course will be free of charge.
Otherwise there will be a fee of £50.

New and exciting Thursday race / advanced training – starting Thursday 11 May 2017 – sign up now

We have been luck to secure Paul Wakelin to coach on a Thursday evening. To find out more information about Paul take a look at his website at http://www.nacrasailing.co.uk/about-us/

Paul, is really looking forward to the opportunity of working with our up and coming local sailors to help them achieve their goals whilst having fun here on home waters in Swansea Bay. Whilst passionate about multihulls Paul is also versatile in helping sailors of all ages get the best from both themselves and their boats regardless of the class. The program will be tailored to cater for all those who’d like to take part.

The programme will be scheduled over 7 weeks as follows;

11th / 25th May

8th / 22nd June

6th July

17th / 31st Aug

The sessions will start at 5.30pm, and will include training, coached racing and theory sessions.

The fee for this will be £105 for sailors with their own boats and £125 for sailors who wish to use Club boats.

If you have already signed up to Thursday training please drop me an email to confirm participation. If you haven’t and you would like a place please complete the online form and drop me an email asap, but by Saturday 6 May at the latest. We do have a minimum number for the course.

Training 2017 – reminder and timings etc

Monday and Wednesday youth courses start this week on Monday 24 April and Wednesday 26 April……

Please arrive at the Club for 5.30, and place kit bags in the changing rooms. (Please note all kit should remain in the changing rooms and not brought upstairs –  and please remember to take everything home at the end of the session!) Please then take your children upstairs to the wet area in their clothes (not kit), and wait until they have been assigned to their instructors before you leave. Unless otherwise advised please come to collect your children at 7.30pm. It could be that they will not be ready by that time, equally it may be that they could be ready a little earlier, as this depends on the activities / conditions etc, so we will try to give you the best indication possible if it is likely to be any different. You are welcome to wait upstairs in the bar area, or on the roof terrace if they are not ready or you arrive early. The bar will be open for alcoholic and soft drinks and the galley should be open for coffee, snacks, and tea one sailors are off the water. Please do not collect children from the water side, and when you do please ensure that you have confirmed with their coach that you are taking them. If you are interested in helping out at the Club please let us know. See you this week.

Training starts the week commencing the 24 April and NEWTS week is the 14 – 18 August NEWTS Week – 9am to 5pm Mon-Thurs, 9am-4pm Fri.

The coaches and helpers briefing is Thursday the 6 April 7-9pm. Please make every effort to attend.

It would be really helpful to me if you would please complete the online training booking form – volunteer section. PLEASE!!

I will be emailing information and forms, for completion to bring to the briefing together with certificates. If you can’t be there please let me have your form beforehand.

Please check that you have renewed certificates in advance of the season.

Training 2017

We are now taking applications for 2017 Training.

The 2017 course details are now available on the website; the planned courses are expected to follow the same schedule as 2016.

The closing dates for courses starting after the easter holidays w/c 24 April 2017 is the 10 March 2017, but if necessary, places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis, so please apply early.

HELP PLEASE!!! Boat House Working Party

Sunday 7th June at 2pm.

Please give an hour or so of your time and come and help; also if anyone has a trailer that they can  bring down to take away rubbish that would be a big help.

Nb Club racing is at 10.30 am that day, so come and race/ have fun first!

Acorn Llangorse Sept 2015

There will be a change this year to the Acorn Llangorse date from the first weekend of September to the 12th and 13th September due to clashes with an  IOCA Qualifying event and a Topper Traveller Series event.

It was decided to change the date for 2015 rather than cancel the event or run the event with low numbers.

Please keep this date free!
